0/10 would never buy knowing what a maintenance nightmare the E60 is

I would only buy a 35k E60 M5 if I had 60k to spend. I can't imagine the cost to maintain a V10.

I don't think it's THAT bad

Not a manual. 0/10 CP worth $500 max.

e60 in general or e60 m5 specifically?

No, it's not THAT bad. It's worse.

really?
now i'm scared
my E90 M3's engine is basically the E60 M5's engine, minus 2 cylinders

It's really not. Especially if you get a 6MT

The S65 actually from what I can tell is one of the more robust BMW motors.
The E60 M5 motors are not all engine related though. The SMG transmission is a real pain in the ass.

Oh ok, I thought you were referring strictly to the V10. Getting the 6MT would definitely help.
I'd probably rather live with an out of warranty E60 M5 with the 6MT than the current TT V8 M5 with the DCT.

So no actual frame damage then? Just some front end stuff...Nothing crazy like welding one half of the car onto some other car?

There's definitely 'frame damage' there. Any unibody in a wreck that serious needs to be put on a rack. I'm sure that had to pull the front 'frame horns' if not do some more serious work.
I've owned a salvage title vehicle that was sold wrecked as a 'rebuildable' before. My mother has had two. None of them were ever perfect after the repair. For a car like that, I'd never buy it with accident damage.

I dunno....If I'm getting a used supersedan in that price range, I have an itch for a Quattroporte, after the catastrophically expensive sequential gearbox was replaced with an automatic.

The Maser is probably even more expensive to maintain!!
I dunno what I would do because I'm so far away from ever buying a large super sports sedan. I've never had a need for something bigger than a 3 Series sedan.
If I needed a bigger car one day maybe I'd look at mid size wagons. That way I'd be getting more than just a bigger trunk and more rear leg room.

To me, there is a big difference between "cost of maintenance" and "reliability".
Like the M5, the biggest issue with the Maserati was the sequential Duoselect transmission. It tended to slip the clutch a lot in real world drive situations....some would have to replace the clutch once a year costing thousands and thousands of dollars. The switch the ZF automatic fixed the one glaring issue with the car.
Sure, your average service call will be pretty pricey, but it's probably on par with the M5. Just get a 2007 or later QP with the ZF auto and it'll be fine.

I don't know much about Masers. I've heard from some people to stay away from the coupe and spider that preceded the GranTurismo because components on it break. But those issues could have been resolved in the more recent cars.
That is bummer that the clutch wear was so bad on the Duoselect. That transmission was a bad idea for that car. A traditional AT is way safer.

Yeah, the Maserati Coupe issues most likely stem from Duoselect, and from the Skyhook suspension.

I heard the interior falls apart too.
It's a great looking car though.
